1. What was your first reaction when you found out about Boone's back-story with Shannon? Is there something that attracts you to all of these characters with darker sides?

I was ecstatic! It was (story wise) borderline genius, I thought. Range I think. I am fascinated by our dark side and the levity of becoming light. I’m just drawn to it, no rhyme or reason...

2. Many of the cast members have said that you all watch the episodes together on Wednesday nights. What happens once the Bad Robot goes by? Does everyone sit around and discuss it? Do you ever go home and watch it again to critique yourself or just for fun?

We do discuss it-intensely and excitedly. Also once I leave yes, I may go home and watch it again and if it’s too late I’ll watch it before work the next morning.

3. Who does the knife throwing on the show? Were you worried when the knife was coming at you in Hearts and Minds?

Mr. Terry O’Quinn. Uh, a bit yes.

4. You're wearing a new ring lately. Is there a special significance to it? Also, it seems as though you're wearing your own jewelry on the show - isn't that unusual?

I don’t wear any jewelry on the show anymore. I do in press and my personal time-it’s an affinity with turquoise.

5. What was your very first modeling job? Would you post those pictures? Many of us would love to see the early beginnings of your career.

It was Ralph Lauren and it was about fifteen years ago. I wouldn't know the first place to look for them-sorry...

1. What has been your most physically demanding job? Emotionally demanding? Why?

Well, there were a few times on Smallville in which it was excruciatingly difficult because of the temperature and the content. I reached probably the closest to hypothermia that I ever intend on reaching for a long time...

"Rules" was because Paul was infatuated with Sean and to feel that, truthfully, was emotionally trying and wild. "LOST" there are some scenes that I've shot that haven't been seen yet that really kicked my ass.

2. Growing up, did you ever realize that you'd turn into a major actor? Everyone says as kids they want to be something, but sometimes turn out to be something different. Did you want to be an actor growing up, or was there another career you hoped to accomplish?

If I ever become a major actor I'll be sure to tell you... To answer your question though, it would have been Marine Biology, writing, or advertising.

4. You have had the opportunity to work with amazingly talented actors both on the big and small screens and have held your own very well. How did you find the transition from modeling, to films, to television work?

First and foremost, thank you. Secondly, like any transition, it has it's moments but I'll be the first to say that I worked my ass off and also got lucky. I'm not happy with or comfortable with most of the work that I've done so far, but I'm sure that I'll get to that place at some point...

Many types actually. I usually go for the abstract, dark and light though I have to admit- something beautiful about it . I would love love love to go into this, I could type five whole pages about art but I can’t because the clock is ticking and I must go and loop (post production work) my episode, which is an intense and time-consuming thing. We’ll hit this another time, I promise, and I look forward to it!

4. Earlier this year, you said you had read the script and auditioned for Lord of the Rings, but you also made it sound like you weren't really interested in the part. Since you're now working up close and personal with Dominic Monaghan, I wondered if you talked about the filming experience - and did you ever get around to watching Part 2 & 3? Also, can I say you'd have made a perfect elf?

I did say that yes. I’ve talked to Dom on many occasions about his experience- it had to have been amazing! Never got around to part 3 I’ll admit but I truly appreciate what went into those films. It’s truly fun to have any conversation with Dom; he’s a neat guy.

5. How do you plan to spend the holidays? Do you like to put up decorations and a Christmas tree at your house?

I’ll spend it, like most with my family- a long overdue R&R period in Louisiana. I miss them and I miss home. Of course! Who doesn’t? It’s that nostalgia which really makes this time of year (in stark contrast to the absurdity of over spending and Hallmark ads) a special and fuzzy time... :)

1. How did you and Dom end up celebrating your birthdays? Did you have a good day?

Very mellow actually. We watched the episode at the Fox residence with the cast and company, then had cake and champagne. It was great. I spent most of the day in the Honolulu DMV standing in line and taking the written test... It was however, much better than the 25 birthday. :)

I’ve been all around Western Europe, Mexico and as many islands as possible around the cont. US like British Virgin Island, British West Indies and the like-I like them all very much indeed.

3. What can you tell us about Boone's backstory? I've heard a lot of rumors on the net and some of them are pretty wild!

Can't tell you much unfortunately. I will say that there is (as with all the characters) much more than meets the eye. Boone’s growing relationship and admiration for Locke will eventually get him into trouble maybe; he and Locke discover something that will change everything. On JANUARY 12TH we find out why Boone and Shannon treat each other the way in which they do. It’s only going to get wilder actually!

5. One day you wrote that you just 'born' catholic. Do you have any problem with the religion? Do you know something about templar knights and what they did by any chance?

I unfortunately made it a rule never to discuss religion or politics in this manner. I will say, yes, I have amassed enough information to have many problems with stories written and edited by Anglo-Saxon men throughout history. I was, yes, born catholic. Secondly, yes, the history of the Templar Knights is quite an interesting one in which I do like to read about and have for a time.

1. Lost is a very intriguing show that just begs for lengthy discussions online or in real life over what it's all about (or I simply have too much time on my hands). Do you and your cast mates discuss it at all and try to figure it out? Is it frustrating that you don't know that much about what's going on?

Are you kidding? Do we discuss it??? Absolutely! It's really all we talk about in a sense-you should come to one of our weekly gatherings; we love the show and all of it’s possibilities. It was extremely frustrating for me not to know that much about Boone; but that was cured once I read the episode that revealed what I was longing to uncover... It’s only a bit frustrating not to know what’s happening on the show, only because we’re all (you and me) so eager to find out-but that is the beauty of this show. We don’t know... :)

2. Ever since LOST premiered, the producers of SMALLVILLE have Tom Welling and Kristin Kreuk increasingly unclothed ...why do you suppose that is?

Gee, I wonder... Well, they’ve had a great run. It’s the biggest show on the network but LOST really started taking off number wise and well, for lack of any better description, if they want to give their audience anything and I mean anything-it’s about time you see a bit more of Tom and Kristen. I mean, what else is there on that show??? [Ahem, Michael Rosenbaum!!!]

3. Archery is listed as one of your skills on your resume. Is it something you just learned on a one time basis or you practice it regularly? Also: what type of bow you shoot: compound, recurve, traditional? Do you like it?

I’ve had a bow since I was 13. I shoot Darton compounds and I love it. I haven’t been able to do it much lately but I miss it. When I stopped (because of time and place-NY and LA) I was getting into carbon arrows-amazing how fast those things are.

Looking for my cat and being miserable. Then miraculously after 3 long, tiring, saddening and crazy days I found her then went to dinner with some of the cast and crew in Hawaii. It ended up being a great day. Thanks for asking. :)

5. I know you lived in Milan for a while during your modeling carrier but have you ever been to other cities like Florence, Rome, etc? Do you have happy memories about Italy and its people?

You just sent me back a few years. Yes, of course, some of the fondest memories that I have of my life were spent in Rome and Florence. Taking the inter-city train from Milan to Florence and back for weeks out of some months was one of the best things that I’ve ever done. It was like living in two cities in Italy. The Italians embraced me and I loved every minute of it-most of my time spent there was with my Italian friends!!! I miss Italy and will go back next year with out a doubt.

1. You talk a lot about existentialist writing and issues pertaining to the field of philosophy known as metaphysics. Is metaphysics your primary philosophical field of interest or are you also into reading about ontology/epistemology/ ethics/ aesthetics/ etc.? (Philosophy buff here. Hee.)

Why not all of the above? It’s a great question and I’m glad that you asked actually, it got me thinking... Thinking that, my philosophy is that, well I don’t rally have one this one is lame. I’m nothing more than a combination of ideology in which I’ve saturated myself as much as I could. In a sense, it mostly makes sense (for the most part) and it’s what I’ve essentially bought into... Truth be told, there are things that I read at 16 while living in Italy (when everything was new and I really didn’t know my ass from a hole in the ground) that I don’t understand now. But I did then? How is that possible???

Well, it is possible that maybe, just maybe, there are things that we comprehend better at first sight? Meaning it’s the same principle that young children are more apt to see spirits of ghost because they are much more open to it; their mind isn’t tainted with the ideas of others. It’s the purest form of comprehension? You could argue until the cows come home that it’s applied knowledge that leads to comprehensive use of information and I’d agree; it’s not the most solid answer... We all know that having a more developed mind allows you naturally to process information and use reason-one of the only things separating us as human adults from animals and infants.

Metaphysics simply is: The area of philosophy that examines the nature of reality, including the relationship between mind and matter, substance and attribute, fact and value. The philosophical theory of knowledge.

Ontology: The area of metaphysics that deals with the nature of being. ( Is it the “Unbearable Lightness of Being” of the unbearable heaviness of being???) That’s my question...

Epistemology: The area of philosophy that studies the nature of knowledge, its presuppositions and foundations, and its extent and validity.

Ethics are just the principles of good conduct. Which is, I must say, a highly misused term in today’s society (it’s a word for politicians, humanitarians and those of us whom listen) and all throughout history. Who has them anymore or who ever did? Please tell me. There are principles, however, we are human- does that say it all???

Aesthetics would be, I guess, an appreciation of beauty and or good taste, or a heightened sensitivity to beauty and or quality of what is seen by any individual. It’s all subjective I think but yes, unfortunately (and I’ll share this with you because we’ve been doing this F5 for so long now) I have a major, somewhat life-ruling, problem with aesthetics.

So yes, all of these things in which you ask I am in some form or another subtlety or radically in search of a higher awareness of to make life and relationships more understandable. And yes, many existential moments have marked milestones in my life as I’m sure that they have for you.

2. If it's not one of the show's many mysteries, who's supposed to be older: Boone or Shannon?

4. Can you please settle a bet I have with my brother? We live in Batavia, IL and I swear we saw you at Portillo's this summer. He swears that there is no way you'd be in Batavia or at Portillo's. We'd forgotten about it until Lost premiered and now we argue about it every week. So were you there and what on earth would bring you to Batavia? If it was you, will you be back?

Yes, I was there, funny you should ask. I was lucky to be partying with Debi and Jordan!!!

5. Do you believe that there is a "soulmate" out there for everyone or do you think we all settle for less?

I think that there are several. I know weird answer, but I’ve come to find out that who you thought was your “soul mate” at say, 20 years old will not be at 25 and so on and so forth. So, by that rationale, I truly believe the people in our lives, at whatever time they are there, are there for a reason and may be a mate to your soul. However, aren’t our souls old? Think about how many we have; but at some point, we find someone who fits many categories and makes us so happy that we end up with them-but they won’t have the same characteristics that someone who you swore was a soul mate had. Thus, we are not settling, we are merely with someone else who is better at this point in life. What the hell do I know, I was with Nicky Hilton for 6 months...

No one specifically, I have to say. People who are role models are good-hearted, or talented, or just hard-working people who care about the people around them and the environment.

2. Dude! Enough with the kittens and poetry--you're making the rest of us look bad! Anyway, what kind of car do you drive?

A new (because we don’t have the technology for a more efficient engines) gas-eating Land Rover. I love it, but it’s horrible for the environment and it makes me sick that I drive it.

3. I was watching an interview on E! the other night and they were talking to Maggie Grace about the show and she said that a few of the guys on the show like to walk around the set in the nude, but she didn't give any names. I was wondering if this were true, and if it is, are you one of the mystery men that participates in this?

We do not walk around on the set nude-that’d be weird... However, at home parties (at night obviously), around Foxy’s (Matt Fox) pool or on the beach, yes, we have been know to disrobe quote frequently. Why not...?

4. Do you feel that Hollywood has changed you in any way at all or have you managed to remain true to who you were prior to entering the business?

I think that anything will change you to a certain extent-Hollywood or not. I’ve seen things change in me that some I like and some that I don’t. Life is a growing process in general but I would answer YES. I have changed... A bit I think at least, for the better

5. I was recently scouted by Proscout to go to an invitational. They use you like a poster boy and say you are where you are today because of them. Is this true? Was Proscout worth it?

I was found (again) there. Success? It’s not because of them and I actually am taking legal action against them... Proscout works sometimes I have to admit. I guess I don’t know for sure how to answer except that it worked for me but they take credit for things in which they didn’t actually do- they just introduce you to people who can make it happen.

The person that is responsible for most of what I have is a woman (my surrogate mom) named Brenda Netzberger. She owns a talent agency in Baton Rouge, Louisiana called Open Range Management. She took me out of NY after I was run over by a big agency, brought me home, told me to stay with her (she had to make sure that it was okay with her husband Richie whom is like a father to me now) for the weekend. Well that was almost 10 years ago, my bedroom still remains there... She’s the one who taught me about the business; the woman behind the scenes who is usually discredited by magazines for my success because it’s not as glamorous as the writers want my life to be... I met her at Proscout and she changed my life more than anyone to date and I think more than anyone will until I have a child.

Um, she seems happy. I talked to her the other day. If she’s happy I’m happy for her...

That word is too much; we use it like it’s paid for-so why buy into it anymore? Not sure what that means? I shouldn’t call her that, but, I guess that one could say, yes.

3. Two movies with the great Faye Dunaway - you rule! What was it like getting to work with this living legend?

She's amazingly talented and iconic. Yes, I adore Faye and we have neat relationship however, she can be hard on people around her. Not me, of course, but I think that she is such a professional that most aren’t able to keep up with her and it sometimes frustrates her. When we hang up the phone or leave dinner or function, we say our goodbyes and that we love one another...

4. Is it still surprising for you to know that YA's Hamilton (and Jake) still has a lot of fans? Do you think that your character, Boone will also have such an impact?

Very. With the story lines that are being written I would be so bold to say, it’s a possibility. Hamilton was a kid and easily identified by virtue of his existential qualities, while Boone is seemingly starting to understand pure existentialism at it’s finest in the most extreme of circumstances. They are both lost people just trying to figure out life...

5. I read that Dominic Monaghan and you share the same birthday. Any plans on celebrating on the set with your fellow costar and birthday boy? Or any plans for your birthday on your own?

We are going to have one hell of a time-put it that way. Dom, myself and our cast will definitely celebrate our b-days the only way we know how-the best way!!!

I was unfortunately very tired from scuba diving all day and just went to dinner with most of the cast. I do absolutely love Halloween though.

In Louisiana music is king, so I am assuming that I’d gone to several concerts that I am unaware of. I am a music freak though and have been to many many others since...

3. Do you think that western societies projection of female beauty (i.e. being ultra skinny), is something that you agree on?

To be honest, I couldn’t disagree more if I tried. By virtue of being in the fashion industry for so long I was always curious how this was sociologically acceptable. There is a British study, if I’m not mistaken, that basically came up with some staggering numbers of house mom anorexia and bulimia numbers that will blow your mind. Millions of women are affected by this every year and it’s sad. Beauty is so so so many things to me like everyone else-it’s in the eye of the beholder. I tend to see the beauty in every thing and every one, if possible. This may sound excessively cliché but everyone is beautiful in some way.

1. The quality that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and is associated with such properties as harmony of form or color, excellence of artistry, truthfulness, and originality.
2. One that is beautiful, especially a beautiful woman.
3. A quality or feature that is most effective, gratifying, or telling: The beauty of the venture is that we stand to lose nothing.
4. An outstanding or conspicuous example.

4. How do think Lost will affect your life? Who are you the closest to in the cast of Lost?

LOST will and is affecting my life in the most of positive ways. I’m close to everyone. We are all very close, even to Malcolm (Walt).

5. You work on one of the biggest hits and most thought-provoking shows on TV. You live in paradise (Hawaii). You're the President of three companies and you're not unattractive to the eyes. Can you tell me why I shouldn't hate you?

Hate is a waste of energy isn’t I? You are very flattering, however, it’s not a walk in the park by any means. I work 12-15 hours a day all week. Even when I am playing my phone still goes off and I must deal with much... See, not so glamorous is it???

1. What is the first thing that goes through your mind when you hear the words "pretty boy"?

Some what physically-justified misperception...

2. You said a few weeks ago that you have a lot of children around you. Does this mean co-star's children or do you have a lot of family children like nieces, nephews, godchildren, cousins? Do you come from a large family?

My co-stars do have plenty of little ones running around to keep you busy and having fun. My family on my father’s side is quite small so we are close. My mother’s side is huge and therefore we aren’t as close but I still adore them all-they’re my family.

3. What are your pet peeves? What is your worst habit?

Pet peeves? I tend to think of them as negatives toward others and since I’m not one to judge (despite popular belief) I’ll keep them inside my own “inner monologue.” If that’s okay. My worst habit? I think it’s similar to everyone else... Doing the same thing over and over again when it’s clearly not been particularly good in the past.

4. What would we find on your bedside table?

Lamp, clock, candle, and a copy of Bobos in Paradise that I am currently reading.

5. Do you make friends easily?

I make acquaintances very easily. Friends-well, life’s short, choose them wisely and be careful of that word friend; it’s very misused.

1. In many of your non-professional, candid pictures you have what my friends and I call the "Somerhalder Smirk". You look kind of uncomfortable having you picture taken, like your wondering why anyone would want to. Are you uncomfortable with all the attention?

At times, yes...

2. Is there future hope for a bigger storyline for Boone & Shannon?? You guys crack me up...do you have siblings?? 'Cause you play the brother part REALLY well!!

The future holds good things for Shannon and Boone! I have a sister and a brother and my brother is here with me visiting in Hawaii, so sorry for the late f5!

3. With IN ENEMY HANDS coming to DVD this month, can you tell us if you were happy with your work on this film? And how big is your part in it?

I think that I am happy-haven’t seen it yet so I’ll let you know... I was one of the leads so I think that the part was rather sizable.

4. Do you feel that the types of films and television shows you have done are things that people could regard as brilliant and inspiring in the future?

Well, you think and hope for that on many of them, however, they more often than not don’t end up that way. Life as A House was close, ROA I think was, too. LOST, well, it just is...

5. How does it feel to be picked as one of the hottest guys ever? [By Teen People magazine.]

Its very different now. Get up, have green tea (of coffee depending on the day) with my kitten on the deck looking out at the ocean, followed by a run on the ocean or a trip to the gym and then off to set. If not on set, then a day fishing or reading on the beach. Producing and script developing at the water's edge is not bad.

2. You have a very "boy next door" look. Is it natural or do you work towards it? Does it take long hours of grooming for that look and are there any secrets you could share?

Uh, not really sure how to answer that one... I don't spend anytime trying to get to the "boy next door" look. I'm not offended but I've always thought of myself as the antithesis of that. Trust me if you were a parent, I would NOT be the boy next door that you would want your kids (especially your daughters)
around...

3. You've said you'd like to have kids someday, any names picked out yet or family traditions you'd carry on?

No family traditions and I'm sure that the names (of the baby) will come to me
and the mom, whoever is crazy enough to have children with me...

4. I've seen these sites around, like Greatestjournal.com and Livejournal.com among others, and what do you think about people who role play as you in a game on these sites?

Role play? Hey this is a family show, shhhhh! Seriously, I didn't know that people were role playing online. Send me some stuff, I'd love to see it. Thanks.

5. There is a rumor floating around that Bush is going to re-instate the draft in 2005. As you are of mandatory age, are you worried about having to quit acting and going to war?

Unfortunately, you are right that the mad man running our country could actually do that. However, I refuse to discuss politics (I feel very strongly about this election) but hopefully corruption will not pay off this time and there shall be no "draft." I would be lying to say that I'm not slightly worried and extremely hopeful for our nation but, I'm not going to war over a bunch of ******* oil and neither should any of your sons, cousins, nephews and brothers! VOTE PLEASE!

Yes, I do now. I found a kitten on set the other day at 5:30 in the morning. I love cats, but I’m definitely more of a dog person…this little guy is the coolest thing in the world.

3. For a young guy you seem pretty comfortable with kids, do you have a lot of kids in your life?

Oh wow, well to me that’s a harder question by virtue of I spent a large part of my “formative” years (as my father likes to call them) reading Nietzsche, Aldous Huxley, William Blake, Wagner, Freud and the like. So my image of beautiful happy literature was askew and focused more on the existential, sociological, religious and governmental contemplative theology of that time… However in the mix later was Kerouac, Ginzberg, Poe, and of course Hemmingway, Fitzgerald and some others.

5. In some pictures you have this sexy "happy trial" going down from your naval. In other pictures, you have shaved it off. Why do you shave it? It is very distinctive.

Sometimes if I’m playing a young character I would. I’ll most likely not again though… What will I do next???

1. ENTOURAGE is one of my favorite HBO shows. What are the requirements to be a
member of Ian's entourage ?

Don't have one... I do have some great friends though who are amazing honest people and who aren't leeches.

2. In Louisiana, it seems like you got to be around a lot of animals. If you were an animal, what kind would you be and why?

3. What's your favorite area in Hawaii? What is your favorite thing about Hawaii?

I've been called at one point or another every variation of _______sexual, so why not?

a. Cut it up into rag size pieces and used it to clean her bathroom
b. Made an Ian voodoo doll out of it and stuck pins in it
c. Gave it to Paris to wear in her latest home video
d. Sold it on Ebay
e. Used it to wipe away all her tears of regret for ever letting you go

Ian's answer: I think that Tinker Bell [Paris's dog] hid it so that she could sleep on it because she misses me. :)

1. Are there any stories or family history behind how you got your first and middle names?

My first name came due to my wonderful mother’s obsession with Ian Flemming which may have led to me writing at a young age and the middle due to my father’s obsession with Catholicism.

2. I read that a supernatural element is being added to LOST...do you think this will help or hurt the series (especially pitted against SMALLVILLE...another scheduling choice made by a network pinhead)?

To be honest and humble, I couldn’t tell you. The only thing that I DO know and, obviously, this is all subjective; this is (LOST) the best thing made for TV that myself and many others have ever seen. If you choose to watch Smallville…well, that’s your choice and who am I to say that you are wrong? However, I just would want you to know that if you are watching Smallville you are missing something on ABC that is so extraordinary and so far beyond the scope of what Smallville could and will ever be. [Break out your recording devices, kids! This is 2004, we don't have to miss either show! - Debi]

3. When searching for a role, are you looking for the character, for the screenplay/scenario, for the setting/location or do you search for genre?

First off you (well me) look for character…a great character one would hope will be in a great screenplay. Every thing else comes in at some point or another but to answer your question role is the best place to start for me. That’s how actors end up in bad films sometimes because you are willing to sacrifice for a great role…

4. When will you post some of your prose/writing samples for your fans to read ?

5. Do you consider yourself old-fashioned and romantic or more of a modern, liberal kind of guy when it comes to women and dating?

I am all of the above, I think. The word “date” is to me the worst word in the world. By definition it makes sense, but I hate dating and usually refuse to do it. I’m always introduced to people and start “seeing” them and can be very liberal (isn’t that word for politics?) or old-fashioned and romantic with a more “modern” approach. Quite frankly, I truly believe you can be all of those things and that’s what makes a great date/partner…

1. Have you ever heard your voice dubbed into other languages? Was it weird to watch/hear?

2. Do you remain "in character" on the set on acting jobs and , if so, how far do you take it?

It depends on the scene. Usually, I’ve already prepared the scene at home the night before and worked on it while driving to set so upon arrival you go straight to rehearsal to really make it come to life. On set all day you do not stay in character. Not on a series, you’d be so exhausted, you’d freak everyone out and life on set is too good because I’ve had the best conversations of my life on set with my costars.

3. Any hope that one day a "Director's Cut" of RULES OF ATTRACTION DVD will be released, including all your deleted scenes ?

4. I can't wait for Lost to air September 22!!!! In an interview with one of your co-stars he stated that his character has a secret. The director of the show gave it to him and he hasn't shared it with any of you guys. Does your character have a secret also? Do all the main characters have their own personal secrets? We do all have our own secrets and it does make for and interesting set. It’s genius the way that our show runners/writers treat the process. It’s what will separate out show from any other, I am confident.

5. Is the dachshund you're holding in the photo in Teen People this month your own dog or just a 'prop dog'?

1. You seem very attached to that striped shirt with the tree on it. Is there something special or a story behind it?

No, not really I just love Libertine (the designers) and thought that it was cool. However, I left it at Nicky’s house and will definitely never see it again…

2. As a longtime fisherman myself, do you try to practice ''catch and release" fishing?

Absolutely on anything too small or marlin and sharks. Always! It really freaks me out here in Hawaii, marlin is heavily fished and kept because of the culture here. I believe in a few years the Federal government will have to step in and change the laws. If you do practice catch and release I applaud you!!!

3. You mentioned in an earlier posting that you had a fun history with Tom Welling. Were you on modeling shoots together and how was he to work with on SMALLVILLE ?

We were on a modeling shoot together in Spain. Tom is a nice guy; uh very different and not as much fun now that he is a star and is married…but hey people change, it’s all so subjective.

4. I am very interested in photography and modeling. When I take pictures I am always very worried about wearing makeup and not looking like I'm wearing it. Do you have any advice as to what types of makeup you wear? Not like products, but more like foundations, eye stuff, etc. Or do you even wear any at all? I'm just curious about the whole application process. It is so different for men than women and every resource that I've investigated usually focuses on women. I would greatly appreciate your advice!

I can’t stand make up actually. I wear as little as possible because I’m always conscious of if it will read on camera, unless the character’s physical state requires it.

It’s in a rewrite stage and will hopefully start shooting this year our the very beginning of the next!!!

1. I am so glad to read that you will be voting this November. This election is said to be one of the most important elections in our lifetime. Do you agree?

NO. Karma is going to get me and I know it; I wish the answer was YES. Think of it like chicken pox, once you get it’s over and at least you know what it feels like...

4. How do you see/handle the *female* frenzy that surrounds you? An anecdote perhaps?

I don’t trust anyone enough right now to do that. I’m learning a shit load on my own-not to sound pompous but I’ve often asked myself that same question and it’s the answer that I give myself…

2. Who's idea was it to do these Friday Fives? If it was Debi's idea, how did she con you, I mean convince you to do it?

It was her idea and she didn't con me. She just put out there a great idea. She's good like that.

3. Bringing out and watching my copies of Young Americans, I can't help but say, Wow! In my opinion this show was brilliant as compared to it's so-called "brother" Dawson's Creek. Yet, it's life span was short lived. However, I can't help but wonder if it would survive today's standards. With shows such as One Tree Hill, The OC, and even Queer Eye for the Straight Guy hitting airwaves, Young Americans was too much ahead of it's time. I'm sure if it was placed on the television now, the series would soar. So, with that being said, do you agree or disagree, and can you explain why? *Also, would you do the show again if you knew it's fate?*

I honestly don't know how the show would do; one can never tell these things. I would not do the show again. I just wouldn't, it was great then but not now, only because I am older.

1. Would you like to win an Oscar one day and as what, an actor or something behind the scenes?

1. Being a producer, writer, director, what films inspired you? What films are among your favorites?

I do plan on being there in the future. No, actually I haven't been to an event like Comic Con. It looks like a blast and I know that my fellow cast members had a blast; I was shooting something in LA otherwise I would have snuck into Comic Con! I never really read comics as a kid but now I'm realizing that they are amazing as an adult!

1. How old were you when your parents got divorced? How well did you handle the transition?

I was 14 when it happened. Handling it wasn't a problem, I think that I was the one saying "just do it already." However, you must understand that my relationship with my parents has always been a bit different that other kids. They're more like my friends, or I believe that I understand them more like their friends would. Also they are best friends so it makes it easier... Listen, a divorce is never an easy thing; in our society it's common practice at this point so as a kid one must try to understand that life will change but it's not the end of the world, parents are just people. If anything positive were to come for a divorced family, such as my own, it can show us what we DO NOT want in our own lives! Remember, knowing what you don't want is as or more important than knowing what you do want...

2. August is here and summer is nearing an end already. Did you get to do the things you said you wanted to do at the beginning of the summer? What was the high-point of your summer?

It's been a strange summer but the greatest one in the sense of ... well, I have the best job in the world! MY high point? L O S T :)

3. Did you inherit one particular family member's looks (i.e. do you look like your mom or dad) or are your more of a combination of family features? Do your siblings look like you?

4. Looking at some of your older modeling work, they're very sexual for someone so young. Did it make you uncomfortable to do such adult work or did you even think about it at the time? As an adult now, do you look back and wonder what the heck the adults around you were thinking by letting you do it?

No, it wasn't weird. Younger, I mean late teens to early twenties, remind us constantly of sexuality... It's what sells the most. Sounds sick, but think about it and look around in magazines or commercials. I only say this from working in that business for 15 years. Late twenties to middle-aged women buying products that are endorsed or represented by an 18 year old model. What's wrong with this picture?

5. In the same train of thought as the question above, what do you think when you see what young teenagers are doing today both in modeling (looking far older than their years) and the influence it has on "regular" kids who will imitate the looks and style.

Again to the aforementioned statement, we now live in a society that bases it's physical prerequisites on images that are digitally manipulated, images of severely beautiful, young and usually purposefully super skinny individuals. What is wrong with this picture?

1. Your last 2 girlfriends are in the fashion industry. Nicky is a model and a designer and Sarah is a designer. Is this a coincidence or do you tend to date Models/Designers?

It wasn't planned trust me! Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me! Kidding... :)

2. Someone close to me was signed up with an agency and in their contract they were not allowed to get a tan. Do you have similar clauses in your contract? For instance, are you allowed to tan or get tattoos? How about engaging in risky activities?

It's tricky sometimes. You have to be smart, not to get hurt and be a professional. Getting tattoos, they get covered and tans are harder. It's not a good idea to go sky diving while shooting.

3. Around this time last year you were asked if you knew any other languages besides English and you said to ask you again in a year, so have you now picked up any languages?

4. Ian, have you ever wondered "what am I to do with all this money (besides funding ocean conservation groups, running three companies, and traveling)?"

5. Was there a "blockbuster" film that you wanted to be a part of, perhaps even auditioned for? Or do you avoid those altogether?

2. Do you have any upcoming projects besides Lost? Will we ever see In Enemy Hands?

I do have other projects in the works. Not sure when I'll get to do them though. Apparently, In Enemy Hands may come out in October, a very limited release though.

4. Do you and Kate M keep in touch? I know I am not alone when I say I would love to see you acting together again. Do you think that will ever happen?

5. How would you describe your hair type and what product do you use (to get that soft, disheveled look)?

Annoying hair! I no longer use anything really. Kiehls Silk Groom is about the only thing I use.

2. How much do you weigh? Do you take any type of weight/strength training supplements?

Not that much right now. :( Yes, designer whey protein, L glutamine and other amino acids

4. How does it feel knowing that you've become a role model for kids? Is it flattering or do you feel a responsibility to act a certain way?

I don't really think that I am. If I am, then I hope that I'm a good one... I don't think it's flattering, you have to be sensitive to the fact that young kids are susceptible to habits that maybe you have.

5. My parents are always telling me not to drink, do drugs, or have sex. What do you plant to tell your own kids, besides the usual stuff?

Here's the thing; kids are going to drink, do drugs and have sex. The thing that parents need to realize is that they must educate their children to do things in a safe manner and open a line of communication up so that it's okay to ask the parents questions. Most kids will (appropriately as human nature tells us to) do the things we are told not to do out of curiosity; education is the only way, I think...

1. Do you prefer women who wear a lot of makeup and spend hours getting "ready" or those who save makeup for special occasions and can be ready in 20 minutes or less?

It’s the most annoying thing when a girl takes forever to get ready. Special occasions are fine, but not to go get a cup of coffee… come on!

2. A lot has been said lately about actors and actresses getting plastic surgery. What is your reaction to women and men who do that? Would you ever have plastic surgery?

I think that people are going to do whatever makes them feel good. Would I ever have it? If I absolutely had to I might… who knows?

3. When do you go back to work for Lost? What is your favorite thing about Hawaii?

I am leaving tomorrow July the 4^th.Where do you start with that? Peace, clean air, clean food, clean everything and the people are wonderful happy people. The fishing is astounding and you know me, that’s all it takes!

4. Have you ever done any voiceover work for any of the ocean conservation groups?

Not yet but I plan on it in the near future. Being in Hawaii will also give me a better opportunity to do more.

5. How do you plan to spend the 4th of July holiday weekend? Do you consider yourself more patriotic or less patriotic than the average person having traveled to so many other countries and getting a feel for other types of government and culture?

I am lying in bed reading a good book and so happy about it. Usually I am in Malibu or on the water partying. Didn’t need to do that this year… Yes I’m patriotic, it’s just a strange time for our country…

1. I think I read somewhere that "Smallville" was not a great experience for you. Is that true, and if it is can you say why?

I wouldn’t say that it was a terrible experience, it was just hard. The people on that show are truly good people; it’s just a matter of very strong-willed producers that didn’t want their material changed by some actor that they’d hired for 6 episodes- understandably so… Vancouver is a great place but I had just kind of gone though a break up, feeling the ramifications of that, moving into a large house and running three companies while traveling to a cold place every week stretched me out a bit emotionally and physically.

18 miles a week running, four exercises per muscle group no less than 3 day per week in the stupid gym, along with a bit of yoga. It’s a commitment…

I have my dream TV show, so let’s talk about the dream movie. An incredible based on a true happening with cultural and historical significance. Period would be fine.

Me, along with people like Sean Penn, Paul Newman, Ed Harris, oh God there are so many I don’t even know. Women such as Kate Blanchette and the like.

I wouldn’t want to direct these people, I would want to live in a world of text with them that comes to life on screen, while still maintaining a producer credit. J But really, right now I just want to make the movie that my company is producing call Living Off Interest; hopefully starring me, James Franco and Rosario Dawson as well as a bit of Kevin Spacey.

4. Lost is now available on the web. What do you think of this? Do you think it's good and can help build momentum for the show or is it a bad thing and you'd rather people wait and see it in the fall?

We knew it would happen. I think that it kills the surprise of it all and honestly, I don’t like it that much. However, on the bright side of it all, as I try to always look, I am sure that there is something good that shall radiate from this.

There have been some good ones lately… Jim Morrison said that “Well, we’re all in the cosmic movie you know, that means the day you die you got watch you’re whole life recurring eternally forever. So you better have some good incidents happening in there and a fitting climax.”

Well, some of the best days of your life if you think about it, are days of great rejoicing for what ever reason. The day a sick friend is deemed healthy, the day that you fall in love, get a new animal/car/house/gift or get the chance to work with people that you love and respect in Hawaii.

And no, I will NOT be starring in the next Hilton sex tape. I’m just directing it!

Very funny actually; it was I guess for a good cause but, it wasn’t the highest point in my life.

3. You said you are going to your favorite spots in the country this summer. What are your favorite spots?

I don’t have a key ring anymore. My car key and the one house key is all I carry.

Friday I think… I always have great days on Friday’s. A year ago I may have said a different day but as of this year my Friday’s have been exceptional.

1. If you could have lunch with anyone you wanted today, who would it be? Where would you go?

I wouldn’t have lunch with anyone other than my entire family. Reason? I haven’t seen them in so long and it’s starting to get annoying. A little place in Louisiana called Middendorff’s.

2. What kind of foods are your "comfort foods" and what do you like to eat to satisfy a "junk food" craving? After all, we can't be healthy all the time!

Comfort foods? I love them! There is nothing better than a huge baguette, several amazing chesses along with a great bottle of wine. For the sweet tooth immediately following, a chocolate soufflé.

4. On yourself - gold or silver jewelry? And what kind of jewelry do you like to give as gifts?

It’s hard to say. I am just starting to really appreciate jewelry; I tend to like old pieces from Europe, old American Indian turquoise jewelry. I feel that it has a history and a soul. However, most women don’t want that story, they want a 10 karat diamond that is theirs and only theirs. Which is fine and I have no problem finding that. You start to appreciate it depending upon whom you are with… I think that is the best way to sum it up.

5. Some people find it hard to write an essay let alone a book. So, my question is how do you do it?

Well, I haven’t written a book in a very long while. So therefore it is to be said that writing just comes out and it takes discipline as well. It becomes a passion and a means of letting out what’s in your head. It’s the greatest.

1. If you were really stuck on a deserted island how well do you think you'd survive?

I would survive very well actually. I grew up camping, reading about, learning and practicing how to survive if stranded. From traveling I have learned for the most part how to survive in any climate. I am obsessed with it. Especially now!

Boat, tackle box, linen shorts and a cell phone to call when I’m in trouble…

My manager and my producing partner… If I’m unavailable for more than five minutes they freak.

5. You're moving to Hawaii for the show, what things (from home) will you miss the most? What things will you miss the least?

I really won’t miss anything, won’t have time to; I will be there often but the fact remains-I’m moving to Hawaii! Who cares!

1. Did you get to do anything in Hawaii besides work? Were you able to take in any of the local sights, etc...

Of course! Swimming, hiking, surfing , fishing, eating, and hung out with the best cast ever assembled! Most definitely, I knew the island fairly well before I got there, so I had some spots that I already like. Then I found some more.

Believe it or not, football; I play more sports now than I ever did. Basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, surfing, and scuba diving are among the things I actively try to do as much as possible.

Going to Hawaii this week to find a house to live in for the summer, then traveling around the country to my favorite spots-I do this every year before production.

I would be a tropical island bird! One that basically chills out in the water all day and eats little fish.

1. Now that we know Lost has been picked up, can you tell us about your character and the show?

Yes! The show, as we know, is a Boeing 777 that goes down on a deserted island 6 hours outside of Sydney-in a remote spot in the South Pacific. What do you do? We soon discover that we aren’t alone on this Island. It’s art imitating life perfectly if you ask me.

My character “Boone” is the son of a wealthy man and the brother of “Shannon” (Maggie Grace). He went to Australia to get his sister out of a situation and now finds himself stuck on the island with his sister whom he loves but at the same time there is much animosity between them.

I do-it can become tiring though at times though. I like to shop for books, clothes, art you name it. I am an planned impulse shopper. At least that is what I tell myself. It means that I will plan to go and be impulsive…

3. You said last week that you like to write, would you ever share something you've written with us?

Versace. It was always a wild time. Crazy girls, crazy guys, and the client (Gianni and Donatella) were crazy. I can't go into details but think…a really high-end A&F shoot with wacky clothes and much champagne.

5. What were you like in high school? Did being a model make it hard to make (or keep) friends?

Not around much. I was there and I enjoyed it to a certain extent. It seems that there was an out for me that no one else had-I could frequently get on a plane and go somewhere with my books and somehow got away with it.

I lost many friends because of it. The ones that did stick however, are very close to me now. It seems as though people don’t know what to make of the fashion industry or the people in it. My guess is that the difficulty lies within understanding a business based on sex and where the lines of sexuality are personified in magazines and text as a “Gray area” while younger guys, especially in high school can’ t get their head around being in that environment.

2. How do you mesh your love of fishing with your devotion to ocean conservation?

Very simply: conservation. Caring for the ocean doesn’t mean “never go in the ocean or take from the ocean.” It’s the methods in which we use that really affect our waters. Fishing is one of my most treasured times in life and I understand that, appreciate that, and want to protect my right to have that option also for my children to reserve that right to swim, fish or gaze at an unpolluted (by unappreciative careless humans) ocean and know that it is protected. Unfortunately, some fisherman use long lines and nets that destroy the ecosystem and we need legislation (which we have now) to stop methods that are destroying. I have the most profound respect for our waters and the more I am on them the more it makes me want to fight for them…

3. What is the hardest thing about guitar playing for you? Are you a good singer and have you ever tried to write songs?

The hardest part is that I can’t play and it drives me up the fuc!@#$ wall! I sing in the shower, that’s about the extent in which my voice is heard… Actually, I walk around singing all day long and on set I always sing-but no, I don’t think I’m a good singer.

4. We know you wrote a screenplay, but do you do any other writing like poems or stories?

I do write prose as well; poems, stories, short stories and the like. Writing used to be a means to keep me sane and now that there really isn’t any time to write. I miss it.

5. You've said before that you like having plants around. What kinds of plants to you have in your house? Do you like to garden or do things like yard work?

I love them. In the house is limited right now-under construction inside and outside. Usually though mostly palms and orchids in the house; outside a variety of large palms, birds of paradise, night-blooming jasmine, various citrus trees, avocado tress and many flowers. Sometimes it’s the best thing for the soul; I just never have the time anymore…

You know that feeling of your past when you were impermeable? Everything was perfect? Well, that was the time in which I remember every thing always smelled perfect, the weather was always perfect, and this horse carried me around and taught me about myself and life. In the rain or shine, it made me happy. That is really the only way to articulate that.

2. Do you read autobiographies and if so, is there anyone that you identify with and why?

3. Do you have any nieces or nephews? Any little ones out there calling you Uncle?

Not much actually. A cell phone charger, sunglasses and some lip balm. That's about it. I don't like things floating around my car.

5. Besides the girl who jumped into your car, what are some of your favorite fan stories? Things fans have said or done that really stick out in your mind (good or bad). Hey, speaking of that, do celebs ever swap stories about the wacky things their fans do?

Sometimes I’ve heard the exchange of interesting stories of people going above and beyond the call of duty.

1. How is "Lost" going? Will you continue shooting it in Hawaii if it's picked up?

Lost is incredible! Shooting this pilot was the best experience of my life. The cast, show runners and crew were just really great people. Yes, when we go to series we will shoot in Hawaii.

2. You mentioned in an earlier Friday Five that the producers of Smallville switched your storyline after you had shot 3 episodes, so you were thinking you were one thing while you were really another. As you most likely know, a lot of people were rooting for you to be a young Bruce Wayne/ Batman. Did the producers intend for you to be him and change their mind halfway through?

I do. E, Doogie (when I was younger because I thought that I knew everything a la Doogie Howser), and my father calls me IJ. I can’t believe that I’m telling you this…

I’m not really. However one day a few months ago I was driving back from Palm Springs heading back to my office on the phone with my assistant. We were going over my schedule and I thought to my self; “wow, being the president of three companies is a tall order and I feel really grown up.” Little did I realize that I don’t know anything about anything, I’m just doing what makes me happy…

1. You have gotten a lot of press as a person who dislikes gays. Is this true at all?

Okay, let’s talk seriously here for a second. When and where is what I would sincerely like to know... Can someone, anyone, send me something that remotely tells me that I said I dislike people who are gay. Please I openly invite you to.

Let me explain how things such as this get out of hand and generally, as well as genuinely, are a great waste of time and energy; it’s all horribly incorrect and disheartening to me.

There is truth in that I’ve been misquoted (care of the individual whom wrote the A&F article) by journalists who play the part of the honest and seemingly delighted-to-interview-you writer, only to rip you apart in the piece (article) after the meeting or the phone call. It seems that after having played the coveted roles of Hamilton Fleming (Young Americans), Russell Henderson (Anatomy of a Hate Crime) (a role that gave me the ability to fight for not only gay rights but human rights as well) and Paul Denton (Rules of Attraction) it’s still not enough for some individuals that there are many gay people in my life whom I love like my family and have played major roles in my career. It’s not enough and at this point, well, it’s easy to find myself at a loss…

Please know this: I respect anyone and everyone’s belief to practice and love who ever you want, however you want, so long as it’s not hurting another human being or our environment.

2. I just saw your movie Changing Hearts, and I loved your performance in the movie! What was it like to be acting opposite veteran actors like Faye Dunaway and Lauren Holly, who played your love interest? And what made you accept the role of Jason Kelly?

Working with the amazing women of that movie was great. The movie itself was not such a great experience. In short, the film didn’t exactly turn out the way one would have expected. Money, time, and editorial constraints can hinder the outcome of a film. Faye, Lauren, Tom and Edie, along with the rest of that cast, were great.

Ha ha. Now I am not only flattered and flush, but I think that you must need your head checked… Both of my parents are great people with there own distinct features. My father was a strapping lad in his time and is usually compared to a Clint Eastwood/ Jack Nicholson combo [Don't forget to mention how wonderfully funny he is!]. My mother is a half American Indian (Choctaw) and half Irish with beautiful green eyes, high check bones and a smile from heaven.

4. I know this is not your kind of stuff, but if you were on American Idol, what song would you sing?

I gotta be honest-I wouldn’t be on the show. I know that it’s incredibly well received but I just wouldn’t do it. However, if one was to have to, it would most likely be a Radiohead song that I would never be able to pull off Thom Yorke, then most likely lead to being thrown off of the stage!

5. If you ever get tired of answering fan questions, well, get tired of us, would you let us know?

Are you kidding? This is fun and it’s great to see what every one wants to know with no magazine censorship, it comes directly to me. I have a relationship with all of you in this sort of weird cyber sense that just works. Thank you for taking the time to give a shit what I am doing. It’s the best job in the world and if being able to be in contact with a group of people who love the work like myself, than so be it.

The strange thing is I must say is that: we are sort of all in this together. Going into a situation (shooting a film) in which the outcome isn’t clear or guaranteed is a scary thing. You, like myself, are hoping for a better-than-not result in the end.

So again, thank you and I’ll keep trying to work hard to humor you or make you laugh, cry, rejoice or simply say; damn he shouldn’t have done that one! J

1. How did you first hear about Habitat for Humanity? Have you ever volunteered to tear down, and build houses?

I first heard about it through my mother. Then started volunteering when I was finished shooting YA.

2. Since you go to the gym every morning, can you share your workout program with us? How many sets of bench press, arm curls, etc. Also, what type of cardio work do you do?

Uh… yes. I just say do four exercises per muscle and cardio no less than three times per week. That should keep you going. J

A really sweet Japanese girl once told me that she was in love with me because I read philosophy and liked Nirvana… I thought, “Well, could be worse.”

What are blocks or video games for? Of course, it’s one of the greatest things in life, playing with children. They remind you just how silly we are as adults; and how sad it is that we lose that amazing quality about us by growing up.

5. Did you enjoy school growing up? If so what was your favorite subject and why?

I did enjoy it. Anything dealing with numbers, science and or literature; that’s fairly broad I understand. Formulas created with numbers and or naturally-occurring compounds as well as literature always got me out of bed and held my interest.

Raking leaves in a yard years ago in the fall. It was horrible. Such appreciation for not having to do it ever again unless I really wanted to. The best was shooting The Rules of Attraction. It was the most inspiring and fun, fulfilling a satisfying job I’ve ever had. Even though some of the content was a bit odd, it still was fantastic being there with that cast and the one and only Roger Avary.

I think that I’ve been in all of the ones that would answer that question. I can’t imagine doing another guest star role right now.

3. At what age did you realize that you wanted to be an actor, or did you just fall into it?

I can barely play the guitar but in am sitting in Hawaii teaching myself every day while I am on set.

5. If Mel Gibson had asked you to play the role of Jesus, would you have accepted? Knowing that it would be a great film that would go down in History, affect our culture, but also would be so controversial, make lightning strike you in the head, brand your back with a real 14-inch scar, make you world famous, and yet put your career at risk? (What would Roark do? :)

Well, really don’t know if I would have done it. The movie is great, visually that is, but slight anti-Semitism may have me thinking a bit more. I will think about it for a bit and get back to you on that one. Sorry, that is something that I can’t just say yes or no to without proper thought. I am always brutally honest and won’t stop now.

I don’t know what “fame” is, but if getting to do what you love, getting paid along with people giving you lot’s of free shit; then that’s my favorite perk.

Not really. Only watch the NBA finals (sometimes), the world cup and tennis. Not a big football or baseball guy…

3. Were you shy or outgoing around the girls that you liked growing up? Are you the same way now?

I would say fairly outgoing. Most definitely, just a bit smarter much much much more selective. J

I don’t think I can remember. Can’t really say that I’ve ever wanted someone to notice me that badly; my relationships just sort of happen…I think.

5. Not often actors get to play themselves. And how does it feel to play some type of character, say, not too positive? Since every actor as a person has his own life principles, would you ever play a person who is totally disgusting for you and whom you would prefer to avoid in real life? I think it requires immense tolerance. I wouldn't be able to do that. Would you? How to overcome the disgust?

It feels like another side of life. That’s all it essentially is when you break it down. We have all felt negative at times in our lives and by virtue of that understand what it’s like to be positive and negative.

I have played these characters. I like them because there again is a chance to let them get under your skin and create something. Paul Denton was not a guy that I would want to hang around. Do you want to hang around a self-obsessive and insecure person? I sure as hell wouldn’t… Listen, there is this thing in us all that, when we meet someone and realize for the first time that they are not for us; we tend to steer clear of them. Right? Life is too short to waste energy on these types of individuals…? Well, the other side to it is that maybe if given one more chance there is something in them that we like. It’s hard to say really but it just makes sense to surround yourself with those that enrich our lives not take away from it…

1. Why aren't there any pictures of you and Nicky Hilton together? Wire Image has tons of pictures of Nicky, but you're not in any of them with her.

That is a great question. We usually don’t show up together or we go in the back door…

2. Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? What do you do when someone asks for yours?

It was the storyline. The whole deer thing and the song thing-I wanted to kill Steven Antin and Joe Voci for making us do that!

That’s really fucking personal! Kidding…feet and ribs. Ssshhhhhh! Don’t tell anyone though…

5. If you were to ask a fan "Why do you admire me?" what answer would please you the most? What do you want to be liked for by your fans (hopefully, not just for your looks, right?).

First and foremost, I would never ask that question to anyone. I would only hope that I would be liked and respected for doing what I love and not hurting anyone in the process.

Well, I start shooting “Lost” tomorrow in LA and the we move to Hawaii. Cross your fingers and toes that this one is done properly and gets a nice big fat pick up from the network. J.J. Abrams is amazing and I think his track record speaks for itself. In short he is the man to have at the helm… thanks everyone.

1. Last week you said you were getting iansomerhalder.com back, will you be using it for an official site or some other kind of site?

Yes. I actually know many married gay couples. It’s 2004 people! [Amen to that!]

That is an intense question. I have so many songs in my head that no one has really ever heard and it would be a pity to describe a song that no one knows due to the fact that the albums are imports and hard to find. I will say, one track off of a specific album that’s easily acquired in you local record store is to me one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded… it’s a song called History by The Verve. It’s the # 8 track on that CD. If anyone like vinyl I highly recommend that you listen to it. Put it this way the song was so beautiful, that Richard Ashcroft threw a chair out of the studio window after first hearing it because it was amazing…J [The Verve! LOL Anyone besides me remember the TWoP recaps and find that answer kinda cute?]

4. If you could go back and change one storyline in the show (YA), what would it be and why?

I honestly wouldn’t change anything except for that last horrific episode with the damn deer.

I don’t know what myspace.com is but it wouldn’t surprise me if I was. It’s strange the places that you find yourself online that you had no clue existed…

Mandeville is more like the hometown. At this point I’ve spent so much time away that I realize my home is where my family is.

No thankfully… Rain and many many drunken maniacs isn’t my idea of fun right now. It’s a calm work/power mode of Ian.

3. What was it about your modeling experience that makes you say you would not allow a child of yours model?

HA! Are you serious?! (wasn’t being mean or patronizing you) The entire concept of making money off of your appearance is a superficial play that I wouldn’t rewrite for me or my children if you paid me. While sex, drugs, rock and roll, and many many other benefits that it seemingly offers; I would just prefer my kids to experience the aforementioned pleasantries in a different light…

One on and island somewhere soooooooooooooooooo far away that it sets that stage of life’s new face of simply “being” no longer alone. A place that when you think upon it makes you smile and the warm breeze that blew that day is always there. What kind of wedding you ask? Never ask a guy that question silly; when it comes to things such as this, men have no say so.

If you asked me that even one year ago I would have immediately said “yes, of course.” I think that now I “am” romantic not “a” romantic. We also have to keep in mind that the word romantic itself means different things to different people.

3. We have entire threads about celebrities and other random people that we think look like you. Is there anyone that you think bears more than a passing
resemblance to yourself?

5. I accidentally typed in iansomerhalder.com instead of .net today and got some crazy page that says Roar.com. (What's up with that?) But it made me remember that a long time ago on Fan Forum there was talk about a .com official site. What ever happened with that?

I think that I lost the credit card which paid for my yearly renewal of the .com. Canceling it while failing to see which bills were automatically paid by that card; some guy in England happen to be online and bought it. However, I have spoken to him and it should be mine within the next few weeks!

I have so say that someone told me that and I flipped because Roar.com isn’t the web site containing the classiest information… oh well, shit happens am I not right?

1. Did you enjoy working with Hayden Christensen and would you work with him again?

2. Have you had a chance to explore Vancouver while filming Smallville? Any places you particularly enjoyed?

I explored it a bit. There are friends there that I am very close to so it’s quite easy to explore with locals. I like Commercial Dr and that area very much. It’s very laid back and full of organic goodies; all the girls wear sundresses.

3. Have you been to any Asian countries, like the Philippines or Japan? Are you planning to drop by there?

4. I remember there used to be a cyclist named Somerhalder. Is he any relation and if so, what is he doing now?

My brother. However you must be from a very small group of individuals whom do in fact ride or this information would not be available to you. If you are in that group I think that’s great. My brother trained me for years and what an experience! He’s starting to ride again.

5. In the pictures from Fashion Week, you looked less than thrilled. How does it feel to be on the other side of the runway, so to speak?

I was a bit sleepy… Ah, it’s sooooooooooooooo much easier sitting down at a show than actually being in the show. The “other” side of the runway is the place to be for yours truly…

U-boat is now called In Enemy Hands; not sure what's happening with it yet. After Smallville comes much producing and doing a movie abroad.

2. I'm from Barcelona and some time ago I read that you liked Spain, what places have you been to and what do you like best about it?

I've been all over the country. Barcelona is definitely my favorite city and the Costa del Sol is my favorite area. I love the people and the life there. I feel very much at home in Spain. Can't wait to go back!

3. Does the online community ever freak you out in their intensity over your personal life? Do you ever not going online because of the reaction to certain things?

No. I think that it is a genius highly efficient method of communication with a vast amount of people. What a wonderful invention!

4. From your background, I would assume you to be quite a spiritual person. However, on July 25th you said "I don't talk about religion". Is it possible, do you believe, to be spiritual and not religious, and vice versa?

I absolutely believe that being spiritual can mean lack of religious belief; or the opposite which is much belief. You don't have to believe in one "religion" to be spiritual, I truly believe this.

1. Are you a vegetarian? It certainly sounds like you are. Were you raised as one or was it a choice you made on your own?

No!!!!!!! I was for a time but I love meat too much! Our body needs it I truly believe. When I was one ( a veggie) it was my own choice and Sarah was a vegetarian so it was easier.

2. Two weeks ago you said you'd like to be a successful husband and father. How would you define being a successful husband and a successful father?

Well, people define success in many ways. I mean it as having success as a father (having happy healthy children) and being around to see them grow happily with nothing but options and love. The same goes for the husband part. However, that is soooooooooooooooooo in the future it’s hard to grasp at this time.

3. Do you believe in fate, or do you prefer feeling in control of your own destiny?

Well the world can not be controlled as we all know; fate to me is a negative word while destiny is the positive version of having some say or “control” by virtue of the decision in which we make. We are as people, merely the decisions that we make…

5. Huge Smallville fan (and fan of your work!) enjoying your guest stint on Smallville. Last week (1/23) you mentioned that *that* set drives you up the wall. Is it the atmosphere on set? Technical aspects? You sound like you have a good relationship with Kristin and Tom, so--just curious about that comment!

Let me set this one straight. The set itself doesn’t drive me crazy, I should have rephrased that... It’s cold up here and the producers really kind of screwed me up by switching my story line after I had shot three episodes thinking that I was one thing, when in fact I was another. It’s disheartening to an actor to be in that position because you play a character a certain way only to find out that the direction was wrong. I guess, in layman’s terms you just feel sort of stupid. However, it all works out in the end and I won’t complain! Thank you everyone and have a great weekend!

1. You obviously can still pull a teenager role, but would you accept one in one of those "American Pie" kind of movies? Or a role that involved frontal nudity?

No would not [do an American Pie kind of role]. It’s [nudity] going to come at some point I just know it. That isn’t that big of a deal to me.

3. It was really cool of you to share your vacation picture. Would you ever consider sharing some childhood pictures? It would be so cool to see little Ian or baby Ian!

Thank you. I love catching fish and didn’t think anyone really knows that I am nature boy… Yes, I will and have considered it. Some photos of me as a very young child will be coming out in a magazine or two very soon. He was a weird little child. All smiles though.

4. In the last scene from Smallville last week, you were reading a book (The Midwhich Cuckoos?). Was that something you are reading or was that just a book handed to you for the scene?

To be honest, it was a book given to me for the scene. That set drives me up the fu@#ing wall and I usually am doing business on the phone so I don’t read on this set.

5. Forgive the question if it seems offensive (it isn't intended to be), but you and Nicky Hilton seem to have nothing in common, how did you even meet?

I ask myself that question every day… I will say this and only this. It is very disheartening to me now that I truly understand that sometimes the public’s perception of someone by virtue of publicity is so invariably different that that individual actually is. Trust me on this one everybody- there is more (much much much more ) than meets the eye.

1. Do you ever play golf, play paintball, wakeboard? What other types of outdoor activities do you like to do?

Golf- occasionally. Paintball- not enough! Wakeboard- I love to! I love surfing, riding horses and wow, a ton of things that I love if I had the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. What do you usually eat for breakfast? What is your favorite flavor smoothie?

Lots of egg whites and granola after the gym, before the gym I have a smoothie. Blueberry or mango. I love smoothies! Everyone should drink them; if you think about it they are really good for you.

3. Reading through the questions you have answered you seem to have attained everything you've wanted in life so quickly, pertaining to the entertainment industry. Is there any type of success that you would like to garner outside of the entertainment field?

Success… there are so many levels. Outside of this crazy entertainment industry, yes there are three things. I want to learn self conservation. That is numero uno. Secondly, I want to be a master traveler again as I once was. And last but not least I want to be a successful dad and husband at some point way in the hell down the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4. The powerful thing about film is its ability to inspire those who watch it. The 'Transformative Experience' is one that is magical and occurs frequently in moviegoers who feel connected with what has taken place on screen. Is there a movie that Ian can say triggered a transformation in any aspect of his life (the way he thinks, the way he acts). I can name 2 or 3 that I have seen, I am wondering which ones he felt most affected by.

Shawshank Redemption was one of them. It made me love my freedom and understand it more… also the power of patience and learning to achieve what ever I want with no boundaries.

5. Many people in the industry have relatives that work for them as agents, managers, etc... Do you have any of your relatives assisting you with your career?

Not anymore. But my mother started me in the fashion world when I was just a wee little boy. She was my manager for years and a damn good one too. Then a woman came into my life that led me through the world of the industry and saw to it that I was safe and always working. She taught me more in life than any one to this day. Her and her husband became my family as well and she is too a mother to me and best friend. So yes, family had much to do with my careers. I love them dearly for it…

Managing to stay alive… No seriously, ahh- starting my companies with my business partner and… staying alive.

Not to bore you but no… I do believe that they are great, I never set myself up for disappointment.

I have. By virtue of being in this business, I read the script and auditioned for it. Every actor on the planet read them. While I think that they are beautifully shot and acted, I only got past the first movie. I rather see 21 Grams- something along those lines… Books are always great.

5. How did you like living in Louisiana, especially so near New Orleans? Did you like Mardi Gras and all that?

I loved it. New Orleans is the best place when you are in high school to party… It’s part of my heritage I guess-but one million people throwing up and urinating in the streets isn’t my idea of a great time any more. I do want to go back one year soon though. Jazz Fest is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Showers, baths once a week or more for relaxation and sanity... I highly suggest on bath a week with bubbles and sea salts.

2. From all of your TV and movie roles, what performance have you given where you walked away thinking, "Man, I nailed that perfectly"? What performance makes you cringe, thinking you wished you'd done something better or differently. It can be a specific scene if you wish.

Well, you never think "I nailed that" but there is a feeling; like the one after the scene in ROA when Paul talks to Sean in the snow I ran away crying. Roger Avary had to hug me and say "with your permission, I'd like to move on," he always asks if you are okay with the performance. That's when you know that you were there, in the scene. Due to the fact that most of the opening party scene was on Sep 11th and it wasn't the best day to be shooting; I never got to loop any of the voice-overs and that makes me cringe..

Usually reading scripts, watching films, yoga, and planning for the upcoming week. As of lately, it's been building a production company with my producing partner Chad. It's taking it's toll on us (as one would notice from any public photo of me lately) but the reward is phenomenal.

4. You said you are 1/4 French. Who is French (your mom, dad, grandmother..) and which part of France were they from? Do you speak French? Have you ever been there?

Yes, I am. My grandmother on my father's side. A small fishing village. Very little unfortunately. Enough times to know that I love it.
